Florida's
Suncoast
The
best waterfront real estate for fishing, sports, leisure and
lifestyle
Fishing:
The Suncoast is home to world class fishing in the Gulf of
Mexico as well as the waters of
Charlotte Harbor, the Peace
River, and the Myakka River. The area is widely known to be the
Tarpon fishing capitol of the world, and Boca Grande is home of
the "World's Richest
Tarpon Tournament." Several other
species of
sport fish are abundant. Charlotte Harbor and
Gasparilla Sound include 750,000 acres of estuary, and the
waters teem with plentiful game and food fish including grouper,
redfish, snapper, tuna, amberjack, flounder, pompano, snook,
spotted sea trout, tripletail,
cobia, sheepshead, bluefish,
kingfish, mackerel, and more! All non-residents are required to
possess a valid fishing license.
Residents do not need a license
if they are under 14 yrs of age, over the age of 65 or are
fishing from the shore-line. A resident license is required when
fishing from a boat or wading out in waters deeper than 4 ft.
Daily bag limits are strictly enforced. The taking of any snook,
crawfish (Florida lobster) or tarpon requires the possession of
a special stamp or tarpon tag regardless of any other
requirements.
Licensing for saltwater fishing is required:

only during times established by law and rule for taking those
species. The stamp costs $2.50.
The "World's Richest" Tarpon Tournament: Sponsored by
the Boca Grande real estate Area Chamber of Commerce, this annual
tournament, with its $100,000.00 in prizes, is fished by anglers
from all over the world. Fish are weighed and released unharmed.
The tournament has developed into a three day festival,
featuring a mid-week street party in downtown Boca Grande.
Proceeds from the tournament help support the Scholarship Fund
for island students. This is actually a part of the greater
$250,000.00 tournament which encompasses 6 weekends, with
weekend limited to ladies only.
